Totally Organics Soak/Sprout Mix Directions
These mixes have a large variety of sproutable organic seeds and grains. When soaked or sprouted as directed, it will offer various seeds sprouting in a variety of stages for a wider variety of sprouting nutrition and taste. Sprouted seeds are at their maximum nutritional value at the very beginning of the sprouting process, before the little sprout actually is visible and continued sprouting offers the ability to greatly alter taste while still offering superb nutritional content.
Soak and Sprouting Method using the EZ-Sprout and Totally Organics Soak/Sprout Mix
What you will need:
1 EZ-Sprouter
Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE)
Totally Organics Soak/Sprout Mix
A little spot in your kitchen
5 minutes of your time
Stage 1 - Soaking the Sprout Mix
(Estimated time to complete: 1 minute)
1. Get your EZ-Sprouter out. Place one drop of GSE into the “outer” container that does not have holes in the bottom. Place the “inner” container with the holes on the bottom into the slightly larger outer container. If necessary, turn the inner container slightly until it fits inside the outer container and the top edges are even with each other.
2. Put the Totally Organics Soak/Sprout Mix into the inner container. I use about a cup for my three birds, two African Greys and an Umbrella Cockatoo for three days worth of sprouts. Fill the container with water. Use enough to cover the seeds by at least three inches (or triple the amount of water as seed). I use room temperature bottled water.
3. Put the little domed lid on the container with the dome side up. Let it sit overnight or for about 8-12 hours. You can click any picture to see a larger version!
Stage 2 - Draining and Rinsing
(Estimated time to complete: 1 -2 minutes)
1. When the seeds are done soaking, take off the domed lid and remove the inner container. Dump the water out of the outer container and rinse it clean. Rinse the seeds in the inner container and shake it to get as much of the water off as possible. (Again, I use room temperature bottled water to rinse the seeds.)
NOTE: There will be a noticeable “smell” from the seeds that have been soaking. Some say it smells like wheat bread, I say it smells like seeds that have soaked all night. The water will be colored and cloudy. This is normal! This is what the seeds will look like at this point (This is the regular mix - the smaller mix will look a bit different). They just look wet and fat from absorbing a lot of water.
IF YOU ARE SOAKING THE SEEDS - you can feed your seeds at this point just after rinsing. If you are going to sprout them, read on.
2. Replace the inner container back into the empty outer container. Align the inner container so that it stands higher than the outer container. This allows the excess water on the seeds to drain off into the bottom of the outer container. Replace the domed lid. Place the container in a dark place, or at least out of direct sunlight and wait until tomorrow. (12 - 20 hours or so.)
Stage 3 - Serving the Sprouts
(Estimated time to complete: 1 -2 minutes)
Okay, it’s chow time! Most of the seeds will just be starting to show a tiny sprout. This is an excellent time to feed them to your birds! They do not have to be fully sprouted. Seeds are most nutritious right before they put their energy into their sprout. The picture to the right shows what the sprouts look like after sitting out from
9 a.m. until 7 a.m. the next morning. Click on the picture to see a larger version.
1. Take off the domed lid and remove the outer container. Dump any water that may be in the outer container out and rinse it clean. Rinse the seeds in the inner container and shake it to get as much of the water off as possible. (Again, I use room temperature bottled water to rinse the seeds.)
2. Put one drop of GSE in the outer container and place the inner container back inside. Fill the container with water so it covers the seeds and let it sit for 30 or 45 seconds to let the GSE kill any little germs that might be present. Remove the inner container, rinse the seeds one last time and rinse the outer container clean as well.
3. Sprinkle included organic alfalfa leaf onto the seeds and serve to hungry birdies!
Sprout Storage Replace the inner container back into the outer
container and store in the refrigerator for treats tomorrow and the next
day. Each batch of seeds that I do, I use for three days then it’s time
to start a new batch. You also have an option of leaving the sprouts out
for another day to grow a little longer. Some birds like the variety of
varying sprout lengths. You can then store the unused portion in the
refrigerator for the next day. If you do leave the sprouts out extra
time, rinse them 2-3 times a day. Please rinse/soak them in GSE before
serving to kill all those little germs.
GSE Soak/Rinse Put one drop of GSE in the outer container and place the inner container back inside. Fill the container with water so it covers the seeds and let it sit for 30 or 45 seconds to let the GSE kill any little germs that might be present. Remove the inner container, rinse the seeds and rinse the outer container clean as well.
in the elevated position. Put the domed top back on.
